Academics at Sterling Christian School
Academic Objectives
Sterling Christian School's academic goal for each individual student is that he/she experience success while working up to his/her God-given capabilities. The school strives to preserve each child's self image while effectively educating his/her mind. The school thus aims to place each child at a level of instruction that will allow him/her to experience this success without undue frustration and stress. Grade placement is determined through mandatory entrance testing and by having a student repeat grades if he/she is struggling.
Academic Standards
Sterling Christian School's aim is for its students to achieve above national grade levels and to succeed in their school atmosphere. SCS feels this is a desirable goal since its students live in a society in which the mastery of basic skills will be essential to their vocational success.
Academic Calendar
The school year is approximately 170 days of six hours and 45 minute duration. There are seven periods in the day each 55 minutes in length. Classes meet for 18 weeks during the semester or 36 weeks per year.
Bible Class
Bible is a required subject as SCS. From its pages beams forth a crystal clear light for the life's pathway and therein is revealed the only hope for the life to come. Bible study enhances the study of other subjects, such as English, history, and especially science. A Christian school is privileged to use this most important tool in the work of character building, which is perhaps the most necessary task of a school. Bible study far exceeds all other courses by SCS inlaying a sure foundation of moral and spiritual values in a day of moral decay and spiritual apostasy. SCS believes that without a working knowledge of the Bible, a student can hardly be considered educated in the truest sense. Students from many denominations attend SCS. It is not the purpose of SCS to weaken student's denominational ties but rather to provide them with a basic understanding of the fundamental principles of successful Christian living and of basic events, characters, and doctrines of the Bible.
In Kindergarten through Grade 6, approximately 30 minutes per day is devoted to religious instruction. This includes prayer and teaching from the Bible. It may also include singing of hymns and choruses, Scripture memorization, Bible games, etc. Students in Grades 7 through 12 have regular Bible classes each day. An effort is made to lead every student to accept Christ as his/her personal savior.
