Athletics Program

Sports program play schedules are listed under Calendar and Events.

As enrollment and student interest allows, SCS competes typically in the following sports: basketball and volleyball. A participation fee is mandatory for each sport to offset costs involved.

While SCS believes that extracurricular activities are an important part of education, a proper balance must be maintained. Therefore, the following minimum eligibly standards must be met in order to participate. The Athletic Director, coaches, and assistants will sign the statement of faith.

Sports Physicals

All players are required to have sports physicals before they are allowed to practice or play.

Eligibility

Students falling below a C average will be able to practice at athletic practices but will not be allowed to play in the game until their average improves about a C. Eligibility is figured on a rolling three - week average. The last three weeks of a school year will count toward fall sport eligibility.

Students must maintain a C average with no failures. Art, music, and P.E. grades are not used in determining sports eligibility.

Grade School: eligibility rosters will be filled out by teachers each Friday and placed in the school office by the end of school on Friday. The A.D. will notify the school office Monday morning regarding any ineligible students. Ineligible students will be notified Monday morning.

High School: Each student is responsible for picking up an eligibility slip form his/her homeroom teacher or the office on Friday morning. The student will then have each of his/her class grades filled in by the teacher through out the day. The slip will then be placed in the school office by the end of school on Friday. The A.D. will notify the school office Monday morning regarding ineligible students. Ineligible students will be notified on Monday morning.

If the student fails to meet the above requirements, he/she will be placed on academic probation. This means that the student will continue to be part of the team and will be required to attend all practices and team meetings but will not be allowed to participate in competition. The student must attend any and all contest occurring during their ineligibility period and be seated, in dress code but not in uniform, behind the team bench. The probation will be reviewed on a week-by-week basis. When a student's grades show improvement and his/her overall average increases to within the required guidelines, the student becomes eligible and may participate immediately.

Once a student is placed on academic probation, he/she must bring his/her average back to the minimum eligibility requirement within three weeks. Otherwise, he/she shall remain ineligible, and shall be dismissed from the team for the remainder of the season.

Attendance Requirements

For any team to be successful, it must practice as a team. Students who participate in athletics are committing themselves to the team. All participants are required to attend all practices.

A student must be in school a minimum of one-half day (3 periods) to be eligible to practice or to play in a game occurring later in the day. For a high school player, this consists of three academic classes.

Unless a student notifies the coach in advance, he/she must be present at all games and practices.

Excused absences from practices may be granted at the discretion of the coach. It is the student's responsibility to notify his/her coach in advance if it is necessary to miss a practice. Sending a message with another student does not constitute advance notice. The student, upon returning to practice, should bring a written note from his/her parent verifying the reason for the absence. The school office will notify coaches concerning ill students. Failure to notify a coach in advance counts as an unexcused absence. In cases of unexcused absences, the following actions will be taken:

  • First absence: the athlete is suspended for one game, required to make up conditioning (as identified by the coach), and to be seated behind the team bench during the one-game suspension
  • Second absence: the athlete is suspended for two games, required to complete increased physical conditioning, and to be seated behind the team bench for the two games.
  • Third absence: dismissal from the team.

Medical Release from Injury

After an athlete is sidelined due to injury in which he/she required medical attention, the following must be observed: " A medical release needs to be signed by the doctor " Coach and parents must agree the student can return to play

Vacations During Sport Season

If a player's family chooses to go on vacation, the coach must be notified in advance. The coach will identify a make-up procedure to be followed, and the student athlete will have the opportunity to complete that procedure at a time agreeable to both the coach and the athlete. When the procedure is completed, the student will once again be fully eligible to participate with the squad.

The intent of this procedure is twofold: to reward students who are available for practice during vacation periods and to insure that anyone who does miss practices is allowed to recondition herself/himself before being reinstated into the lineup.

Conduct and Disciplinary Process of Students

Coaches are responsible for the discipline of their respective team members. If necessary a student may be referred to the athletic director and then the school principal for additional discipline.

All rules of conduct noted in the student handbook are in effect at all times while participating in athletics. It is important that students realize that they represent SCS not only during the athletic contests but also while traveling to and from games, while being a spectator at events in which SCS is participating, while practicing, etc. Two areas of concern relates to dress code and music. The rules of conduct extend t all persons involved in athletic programs. This includes coaches, scorekeepers, fans, etc. Under no circumstance may a parent, either during or after an athletic event, attempt to speak directly to the officials/referees or to the coach of the opposing team.

Students will:

  • Will model good sportsmanship by assisting fallen opponents and showing respect in pre and post game events.
  • Will not participate in unwholesome gamesmanship or dishonorable conduct.
  • Will not use profanity, obscene gestures, sexual remarks, trash talk, taunting, boasting, etc.
  • Will live and compete honorably.
  • Will treat the coaches and officials with respect.
  • Will exercise self control
  • Will display humility in victory and graciousness in defeat.
  • Will demonstrate Christian behavior in all aspects of the game.

Home School Athletics Policy

SCS desires to support home schooling families by permitting their children to participate on SCS team whenever the following conditions or requirements are met.

It will be the normal policy that a home schooled student may not be placed on a SCS team if it results in a regular SCS student being cut from the team.

Home schooled athletes will be required to pay a home school fee of $50.00 to participate in athletics at SCS. In addition, home schooled students will pay the regular sports participation fee also.

Home schooled athletes must comply with all rules expected of SCS students, are required to obtain all physicals, and to maintain a C average with no failing grades.

Home schooled athletes and their parents are required to meet all SCS dress code requirements and to follow all school conduct policies. The school reserves the right to immediately remove any home schooler from a team if he/she or his/her parents fail to follow and/or support SCS's policies and standards in action and in spirit.
