Mission and Educational Philosophy

Mission Statement

Sterling Christian School was originally created in 1979 as Twin City Nazarene School to provide a quality Christian Education. In 1991, parents organized Sterling Christian School. The parent organization then took over operations from the former Twin City Nazarene School and relocated to Galt, Illinois. It became a new inter-denominational Christian school under the supervision of the Sterling Christian School Association which is a 501(c) (3) organization.

The goal of Sterling Christian School remains to provide a quality Christian Education to the Sterling Christian Community and surrounding areas. SCS exists because godly men and women from various evangelical churches had a vision for Christian Education. SCS's purpose is to provide a quality education taught from a Christian perspective by dedicated men and women who love the Lord and are called and qualified to teach. "… that in all things He might have the preeminence" (Colossians 1:18b).

It is the mission of Sterling Christian School to provide the Christian family with Christ-centered educational experiences emphasizing the development of Christian character, educational excellence, and preparation for a lifetime of service to God and man.

While evangelism is certainly an important part of Christian education, it is not the primary mission for which SCS exists. The primary mission of SCS is to train and equip Christian young people to live in the world in such a way as to bring honor to their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in all they do and say as they seek to do His will. SCS thus selects curricula and teaching staff that seeks to prepare your child (children) for college or whatever he/she chooses to pursue and to develop those qualities which will bring honor to Christ. We do encourage the children of SCS to be a Christian example to their classmates and friends and to participate in personal evangelism.

Educational Philosophy

Sterling Christian School's philosophy of education is based on the following presuppositions.

  1. God's revelation is the basis of all truth. Since education deals primarily with the communication of knowledge, the defining of knowledge and of truth becomes important. Knowledge may be defined as an understanding or clear perception of truth. The biblical view of knowledge presupposes a source of all knowledge, for knowledge is dependent upon truth, and truth, in turn, is dependent on God. All avenues of knowledge stem from God. God is truth, and has chosen to reveal Himself through general and special revelation. Since God is the source of all truth, then all truth is God's truth. The seat of truth is God's revelation, contained primarily in the inspired word, but manifest also in creation. The revelation of God becomes the heart of any subject matter. Through the Bible, the inter-relatedness of all other subject sand truths is made possible. Because the Word of God is the key factor in the communication of knowledge, then any and all education should have the Word of God as its foundation.

  2. Education is primarily the responsibility of parents. The first social unit instituted was that of the family. One of the primary purposes of the family is the nurturing and upbringing of children. This responsibility is given by God to parents. Christian education should supplement and encourage rather than supplant the training children receive in a Christian home. SCS exists to assist Christian families in the fulfillment of the Biblical mandate to "train up children in the way they should go." It is not the goal of the school to replace the home or to solve academic or behavioral problems.

  3. The teacher's lifestyle should be that of an exemplary Christian role model. The Christian Educator is to be a guide, or resource person, in the wonderful experience of learning. Having had a personal conversion is a necessity. The educator must have experienced the reality of what he/she is teaching or he is merely the "blind leading the blind". It is essential that the teacher be both a Christian and an educator. As a Christian, the teacher will have experienced the reality of God's truth and will possess God's spirit to empower him/her and his/her teaching. As an educator, he/she functions according to the educational principles contained in the Word of God. The effective Christian teacher must be a leader who exemplifies what he/she is teaching. In light of this conviction, faculty members are selected for both their spiritual maturity and professional ability.

  4. SCS believes that students learn as much from their teacher's attitudes and role modeling as from planned classroom instruction. In light of this conviction, members of the school's faculty are selected from both spiritual maturity and professional ability. Faculty members attend various evangelical churches from around the area.

  5. Christian education is education for the whole person. Education that does not recognize authority, necessity, and content of God's revelation teaches only toward goals that are identified as cognitive, affective, and psychomotor, i.e., man consists only of mind and body. The integration of truth based on biblical revelation also deals with the spiritual component in the life of a Christian student. Apart from the spiritual life available through faith in Jesus Christ, no person is complete; any education that does not extend to the spiritual component as a moral agent entrusted with choice, education must include the teaching of absolutes necessary for making decisions that affect one's relationship to the Creator. Christian education deals with a student's intellect, emotion, and will in relationship to his response to God and His revelation

  6. Christian education requires submission of all intellect and will to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. The goal of Christian instruction is to develop attitudes and behaviors consistent with biblical principles. The standard of measurement of Christian education is attaining to the fullness of maturity in Christ. This process requires that all knowledge and actions be integrated into a world-view that reflects biblical truth and the activity of the Holy Spirit.
